Cedar Canvas CanoesAll of our cedar canoes are constructed of only top grade cedar that we select ourselves. We use high quality air-dried wood for our inwales, outwales and trim. The stem bands are made of brass and all fasteners that we use are brass, bronze or stainless steel. The white cedar ribs are steamed then bent over a 16 or 17-foot mold. After the ribs are completely dried, we fare them, then coat the backs of them with raw linseed oil before the planks are attached to the ribs with brass tacks. The planks are prevarnished before they go on the canoe so there is no raw wood to absorb water. Great care is taken to shape the plank to insure a smooth hull. Before the canvas is put on, the hull is oiled to control water absorption and increase its flexibility. The cotton duck canoe canvas is filled with time tested oil base filler we make in our shop which was developed from a formula that dates from the early part of the 20th century. The filler is hand rubbed into the canvas to completely fill the canvas weave and give it a smooth finish. Our paints are also prepared in our shop. They are oil base paints providing the pliability needed to flex with the hull and not crack prematurely. The highest grade of UV filter varnish is used on all exposed wood. Your canoe will be fitted with a carved deep-dish hardwood yoke and hand caned seats. The full-length keel and heavier canvas are options.
